The role of compostable packaging in a circular economy.

Time: 10h30 – 11h00

Compostable packaging is a vital part of the circular economy, offering a transformative alternative to traditional single-use plastics and even recyclable materials. Recyclable packaging stays within a limited industrial loop, it is processed and reused until its quality eventually degrades.

John will unpack the role of compostable packing in more detail in his talk.

John has been involved in sustainable packaging for the last 17 years.  A qualified optometrist he made the switch to sustainable packaging after seeing the environmental impact of packaging on our planet.

John attended the Packaging Institute’s one year diploma in packaging passing cum laude.  He has lectured the course as well as giving guest lectures at UCT & Stellenbosch Universities and other institutions.

He has won numerous awards in the field of sustainability.  The National Geographic award for the world’s first compostable coffee pouch.  The Institute of Packaging SA sustainability award and others.

John was chairman of the Western Cape Institute of Packaging for two terms between 2015 and 2018.

John is currently Sales Director at Bio-Pak.
